0% Waste: It's Worth It
During the process of making the Freedom Kits we always find ourselves with lots of left over pieces of fabric and other materials that are no longer usable . . . for the kits at least. We also occasionally have fabric donated that unfortunately won't work for our kits. Our volunteers take what's left and skillfully craft other items to either be donated to other charities or sold at local markets for fundraising. We don't want anything to go to waste. If we can't use it, then we find someone who can. See all the different ways we've done this below.

Blankets
Flannel fabric scraps make great blankets. We've made all sorts of full sized and smaller size blankets that we've donated to foster kids through "Project Linus", as well as local homeless shelters. So many of our volunteers are veteran quilters and make these blankets with so much love.
Animal Toys & Beds
The smaller pieces of fabric have been absolutely perfect for making cats toys, guinea pig beds, dog beds, you name it. We also collect all of our empty thread spools, which cats love to play with. These have been popular items we sold at fundraisers as well as donating them to our local Humane Society

Mini Kits
As part of our zero waste goal, we have developed a kit designed specifically for smaller girls (ages 9-11) using mostly materials that would have gone in the trash. We cut the PUL layer from the scraps leftover from our larger guards, and make the absorbent core using scrap flannel from the larger pads. We have been giving these kits out in our local elementary and middle schools. Each "mini kit" includes six all-in-one snap-on pads, an instruction card, a wet bag and a carrying bag
